How Vetted Contractors Help Manage the Risks of Construction Insolvencies

Flooring is a major aspect of most construction contracts and with construction insolvencies at their highest level for over a decade, choosing the right installer has never been so important.

September saw a large UK contractor ISG enter administration, and the impact will be felt by almost 2,500 employees and throughout the supply chain. The administrators, EY, have confirmed in a statement that no further work will be undertaken on existing contracts and all known creditors will be contacted in writing.

Build UK with the support of Wedlake Bell LLP has published a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to support organisations in the supply chain that may be affected. The guidance includes the details of ISG’s administration, what to do if you are owed payment or need access to site, and potential next steps.

A Scottish contractor, Hadden Construction has also fallen into administration during September.

CFA CEO Richard Catt comments: “The number of small and larger builders, main contractors and shopfitting companies entering administration is concerning. One of my first thoughts is to all of those directly employed who it will affect, but then equally that moves on to the supply chain. I have become aware of a number of CFA members who have been involved in projects and for whom this is likely to impact. I would obviously like to remind members that we are here to assist, and should members need support we are happy to discuss any options that might be at our disposal.”

Using a vetted contractor is an advantage to specifiers and main contractors who want to ensure that the business they use is credible and reliable. These require a high level of service, installation and support which CFA members can provide. As a result, many public and private organisations and an increasing number of local authorities specify the use of CFA members.

Through the CFA, all members have access to up-to-date Technical, Environmental and Quality Standards and all adhere to a Code of Conduct. CFA’s contractor members are equipped with a wealth of advice to assist installations, including British Standard codes of practice and other relevant resources and guidelines. With this support CFA members are primed to deliver flooring solutions for lasting, sustainable design.

CFA members vet the contractors so you don’t have to, indicating that all members are established quality companies offering high standards of installation. In addition to contractors, the CFA directory includes manufacturers, distributors and consultant, making it easy to search for a solution for your flooring project needs.
